CHICO, Calif. — The Western Oregon baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday at Nettleton Stadium, falling 5-4 in 11 innings before earning a 4-1 win over Chico State.
Game 1 – Chico State 5, Western Oregon 4 (11 innings)
Western Oregon and Chico State traded late blows before the Wildcats walked off with a run in the bottom of the 11th.
WOU (3-5) took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Zane Garvey and an RBI knock from Jason Olsen. But Chico State (5-6) tied the game before pushing across the winning run in the 11th.
Garvey finished with two RBI, while Olsen added an RBI and scored once. Chris Arce recorded a double among his five plate appearances.
Josh Johnson started and worked 6.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs with two strikeouts and two walks. Logan Larrance tossed 2.0 innings in relief, giving up two hits and one run with one strikeout and one walk. Max Holden (0-1) was charged with the loss after throwing 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts and one walk.
Game 2 – Western Oregon 4, Chico State 1
Western Oregon responded in the nightcap behind a complete-game effort from Wyatt Rosales.
Rosales (2-0) went the distance, allowing five hits and one run with three strikeouts and one walk over 7.0 innings.
The Wolves struck first with two runs in the opening inning and added two more in the seventh to secure the 4-1 victory. Garvey went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Arce collected two hits and scored once. Alex Harden drove in two runs, and Tyler Mohler added an RBI.
The Wolves hit the road again next week with a four-game set at Stanislaus State.
