Mauer's go-ahead homer in 7th leads WOU past WWU in game 2 to take 3 of 4 from Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Western Oregon softball team split a doubleheader with Western Washington on Saturday, falling 10-2 in the opener before rallying for a 7-6 win in game two behind Lauren Mauer's go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning at Viking Field to take three of four in the non-GNAC series.

Game 2 — Western Oregon 7, Western Washington 6

Western Oregon (14-11 overall) erased a late deficit in the second game, using Mauer's clutch swing to complete the comeback.

Trailing 6-5 entering the seventh inning, Victoria Zimmerman reached base ahead of Mauer, who drove a pitch over the center-field fence for a two-run homer that gave the Wolves a 7-6 lead.

The Wolves had built an early lead in the second inning when Haley Homan grounded out to bring home Brooklyn Schneidt before Hope Bodak reached on a fielder's choice and throwing error that scored Sydney Conklin for a 2-0 advantage.

Western Washington (14-11) answered with a run in the second and two more in the third to move in front 3-2. WOU regained control in the fifth, scoring three runs highlighted by Lexi Baumgartner's two-run double and a sacrifice fly by Conklin to make it 5-3.

The Vikings responded again in the sixth inning with two runs to take a 6-5 lead before Mauer's decisive blast in the seventh.

Mauer finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Kennedy Abbas started in the circle for WOU, pitching four innings and allowing six hits and three runs with two strikeouts. Penny-Lew Barnett worked 1.1 innings in relief, and Braeli Martin closed the game with 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the victory.

Game 1 — Western Washington 10, Western Oregon 2

Western Washington used a big fifth inning to pull away in the opener.

The Wolves struck first in the fifth inning when Mauer tripled to drive in Madelynne Hommel and Zimmerman to give WOU a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings responded with eight runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of multiple walks and hits to surge in front 8-2. Western Washington added two more runs in the sixth to close out the run-rule victory.

Mauer went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Wolves offensively, while Hommel finished with two hits.

Abby Stansbury took the loss for Western Oregon, pitching five innings while allowing seven hits and eight runs (two earned) with eight walks and one strikeout.

WOU opens GNAC play Friday at Central Washington.
