SEASIDE, Calif. — The Western Oregon baseball team closed its four-game series at No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay with a 10-9 loss in 11 innings on Sunday after Chris Arce's game-tying, three-run homer in the eighth helped force extra innings.
WOU led 5-0 after two innings, fell behind by three in the seventh, then answered when Arce launched a three-run shot to left in the eighth to tie the game at 9-9. The Wolves put the tying and go-ahead push together after Zane Garvey singled and Benny Nazario was hit by a pitch, but could not push across another run after that.
Cal State Monterey Bay won the game on a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 11th.
Western Oregon (9-16) got two hits and two RBI from Garvey, while Arce finished 2 for 6 with four RBI and two runs scored. Robby Shepherd added three hits, and Collin Irwin added an RBI and a run scored.
Shane Bailey started for WOU and allowed three earned runs on six hits over 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Logan Larrance was strong in relife, but took the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits over 3.1 innings.
Saturday - Game 1: No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay 12, Western Oregon 2
The Wolves dropped Saturday's opener after Monterey Bay built a 6-0 lead through two innings and added four more in the fourth.
Arce went 2 for 5 with a double, while Tyler Mohler had a hit and an RBI. Benny Nazario added a hit and two walks for WOU, and Irwin scored once and walked.
Saturday - Game 2: No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay 7, Western Oregon 2
Western Oregon stayed within striking distance into the middle innings of Saturday's second game before a five-run fourth gave the Otters control.
Jayger Baldwin provided the biggest offensive spark for WOU, going 2 for 3 with a solo homer and two RBI. Nazario doubled, Alex Harden doubled and scored, and Gunnar Shiotani added a hit.
The Wolves return to home and to GNAC action Saturday when they host Saint Martin's. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
