Wolves rally to win game one with Cordero walk-off, also take game two from SFU

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Simon Fraser on Friday at the WOU Softball Field, highlighted by Emma Cordero's walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning that lifted the Wolves to a 5-4 win in the opener before WOU completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

Game 1: Western Oregon 5, Simon Fraser 4

Simon Fraser (2-18 overall) struck first, scoring three runs in the opening inning to take an early lead.

The Wolves began chipping away in the third inning. Madelynne Hommel drove in a run with a single before Emma Cordero brought home another run to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Western Oregon tied the game in the fifth when Hommel scored on a Simon Fraser error.

The Red Leafs regained the lead in the sixth inning, but the Wolves delivered the decisive moment in the bottom of the seventh. With runners aboard, Cordero ripped a double to the outfield that brought home the tying and winning runs, sealing the comeback victory.

Cordero finished 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead WOU at the plate, while Hommel and Sydney Conklin each recorded two hits.

Kennedy Abbas started in the circle for Western Oregon and allowed four runs on five hits over six innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Abby Stansbury pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win.

Game 2: Western Oregon 5, Simon Fraser 2

The Wolves carried the momentum into the nightcap, scoring two runs in the first inning to take an early lead.

Western Oregon added three more runs in the third inning to extend the advantage to 5-0.

Brooklyn Schneidt led the offense with two hits and two RBI. Lauren Mauer also had two hits and an RBI, while Hope Bodak collected two hits and drove in a run as the Wolves totaled 12 hits.

Penny-Lew Barnett earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Braeli Martin pitched two scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts to record the save.

Western Oregon and Simon Fraser continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon in Monmouth.
