Hommel goes 4-for-4 in game 1, Martin tosses 1-hitter in game 2 to lead WOU doubleheader sweep of MSUB on Friday

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon softball team used a dominant offensive showing in game one and a lights-out pitching performance in game two to sweep MSU Billings, 9-3 and 4-0, in GNAC action Friday at WOU Softball Field.

With the wins, WOU improved to 19-14 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while MSU Billings fell to 2-31, 0-10.

Game One: WOU 9, MSUB 3

WOU piled up 17 hits in the opener, breaking the game open with a five-run third inning to take control early.

Madelynne Hommel set the tone at the top of the lineup, delivering a perfect 4-for-4 performance with a home run, double, two RBI and three stolen bases.

WOU's Lexi Baumgartner drove in two runs, while Emma Cordero and Brooklyn Schneidt each added an RBI. Lauren Mauer went 3-for-4 to help fuel the offensive surge.

In the circle, Kennedy Abbas earned the win, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing three hits and no runs with five strikeouts and five walks.

Game Two: WOU 4, MSUB 0

WOU leaned on a dominant outing from Braeli Martin to complete the sweep.

Martin was in complete control, tossing a one-hit shutout while striking out nine and walking four. She faced just 26 batters and never allowed a runner past second base.

At the plate, Hommel continued her strong day, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the offense. Baumgartner added an RBI, and WOU capitalized on key opportunities with patience at the plate, drawing five walks.

The Wolves continue their GNAC series against MSU Billings on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for noon in Monmouth.
