LACEY, Wash. --- Just seven days ago, the Western Oregon baseball team was 4.5 games back of the final spot into the GNAC Championships.
Seven days later, the Wolves are now prepping for the conference tournament after sweeping Saint Martin's 7-3 and 9-2 Friday on the road to complete a mad dash to end the regular season.
WOU thanks to going 4-0 this week and Central Washington dropping their final six games of the season snags the third-and-final spot into the GNACs - finishing a half game ahead of the Wildcats. The Wolves finished 14-15 in GNAC play - a .483 winning percentage - while the Wildcats went 15-17, a .469 winning percentage.
The Wolves will open round-robin play at the GNAC Championships noon (PT) Thursday against Montana State Billings before taking on Northwest Nazarene at 3 p.m. (PT).Â
Game 1 - WOU 7, SMU 3
The Wolves trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth before scoring seven runs over the next three innings to beat the Saints 7-3 in Friday's first game.
WOU got a two-out, game-tying RBI single from
Jayger Baldwin in the seventh followed by a two-out, go-ahead RBI single from
Zane Garvey to take a 4-3 lead.
Shane Bailey got the win, going seven innings and giving up one earned run (three runs total) on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Garvey pitched the final two innings scoreless with two strikeouts and a lone hit allowed.
At the plate, Garvey finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run,
Chris Arce was 2-for-5 with a double, two RI and a run while Baldwin finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Game 2 - WOU 9, SMU 2
Unlike game one, the Wolves never trailed in game two thanks to scoring a single run in each of the first three innings and scoring three runs in the fifth and and another three in the seventh.
Collin Irwin led WOU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs. Baldwin finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run,
Jason Olsen was 2-for-5 with a run,
Tyler Mohler was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and
Robby Shepherd finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs.
Wyatt Rosales picked up the win, going 4.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Hunter Lutman picked up the save, going the final 2.1 innings and giving up no runs, a hit and adding a strikeout.
