Wolves bounce back behind Fullmer shutout to split Friday doubleheader with Western Washington

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon softball team split a doubleheader with Western Washington Friday afternoon at WOU Softball Field, winning game two 8-0 before falling in the opener 8-4.

Game 2 – WOU 8, WWU 0

Western Oregon used a balanced offensive attack and a complete-game shutout from Alyssa Fullmer to blank Western Washington in five innings in the second game of the doubleheader.

Fullmer was dominant throughout, scattering four hits and striking out one while walking three over five innings to earn her second win of the season.

The Wolves got on the board immediately. Lauren Mauer reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score when Lexi Baumgartner was also hit by pitch with the bases loaded to make it 1-0.

WOU broke the game open in the second inning when Mauer doubled and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches. Madelynne Hommel followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.

Baumgartner plated another run in the third with an RBI single, and the Wolves erupted for four more in the fourth to put the game away. Reghann Fairbairn drove in one with a single, and Brooklyn Schneidt reached on a sacrifice that produced another run on an error. Two wild pitches added to the damage before Emma Cordero singled home the final run of the inning to cap the 8-0 victory.

Cordero finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hommel went 2-for-3 with an RBI as well, and Mauer was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Jocelyn Rush drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Game 1 – WWU 8, WOU 4

Western Oregon fell in the opener, 8-4, as Western Washington jumped ahead with six runs through three innings and held on despite a late rally from the Wolves.

Rush homered in the third inning for WOU's first run, and Mauer belted a two-run home run in the fourth to pull the Wolves within three. Schneidt added a solo shot in the seventh.

WOU closes out its season with Senior Day between games one and two Saturday with the first game starting at noon.
