A native of Powers, Oregon, Boutin has accumulated 35 years of experience as a head coach, totaling 642 wins. He coached WOU to six straight conference championships, three wins at the NAIA Nationals, and two district championships. In 1982, Boutin coached the WOU squad to a 30-2 record, and the team was eventually selected to the WOU Hall of Fame. 

Prior to coaching, Boutin set the record for career points and rebounds at Lewis and Clark College, which is a record that still stands today. He was then drafted by the New York Knicks.

He has also coached at Willamette University, Idaho State, Lane Community College, and Dallas High School. Overall, he has sent 32 players from these schools on to professional careers.
