Box Score LACEY, Wash. - Seniors Kayla Mainer and Stacey Bennett both registered double-doubles to help lead the Western Oregon University volleyball team to a three set sweep at Saint Martin's Thursday, Oct. 16.
With the 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13 victory, the Wolves (15-1) collected their 13th-straight win and remained undefeated in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 8-0. WOU continue to hold a 1.5 match lead in the GNAC over Alaska Fairbanks. The loss drops Saint Martin's to 1-7 in conference and 4-13 on the season.
Bennett had a team-leading 12 kills to go along with 14 digs as she recorded her third consecutive double-double. Mainer was the only other WOU student-athlete with double figure kills as she posted 10 kills and 12 digs. Danielle English had a team-high 17 digs while Amy Herron led the team with 20 assists.
"Saint Martin's was a better team than we saw early in the year and we needed a workman-like effort tonight to beat them," said head coach Brad Saindon. "Every conference win is important especially the road matches."
The Wolves led only 20-19 in the first set but took five of the last six points for the 25-20 win. WOU only trailed at 1-0 in the second set as it held the lead throughout much of the match and went on to the 25-20 set victory. In the third set, Western Oregon used a 14-2 run to seize control of the match early and win 25-13.
The Western Oregon volleyball team now returns home to face Central Washington Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:00 p.m.
