Box Score BELMONT, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona went on an 18-6 run to end the first half and never trailed again to claim a season-opening 77-64 win over the Western Oregon women at the NDNU Tip-Off Tournament in Belmont, Calif.
Western Oregon had a 10-point lead with 7:22 to go before intermission when the Broncos went on their blitz. CPP led 39-37 at the break and then came out of the locker room to stretch its lead to as many as 15 points. The Wolves would crawl back to within five points on a three-pointer by Katie Torland with 3:52 left (63-58), but they would get no closer the rest of the way.
"In the first half we were able to get out in transition, make some three's and get their posts running," said head coach Greg Bruce. "We really scrapped and battled against a much bigger team but in the end their advantage in the post got us."
Torland would lead in scoring with 16 points, and she also had six rebounds. Sara Zahler added 12 points and seven boards, while Shayla Corder led the Wolves in the rebounding department with 10. WOU shot just 33 percent from the field and hit just 6 of 25 three-point attempts.
Megan Ford did it all for the Broncos, scoring 26 points with nine rebounds and three assists.
"I was happy with our effort tonight," continued Bruce, "but tomorrow is going to be a grinder and we will have to see what happens from there."
Western Oregon will play Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at 1 pm in the pre-set tournament format. Host Notre Dame de Namur will play Cal Poly Pomona at 3 pm.
