Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. - The Western Oregon University volleyball team (2-0) collected its second win of the day in the Otter Classic at Seaside, Calif., with a 3-1 victory over host Cal State Monterey, Friday, Aug. 29.
The Wolves opened the match with wins in set one, 25-22, and in set two, 25-18. The Otters then posted a 23-25 win in the third set but Western Oregon responded with a convincing 25-11 victory in the fourth set.
Kayla Mainer led the Wolves with 16 kills on 34 attempts while setter Jordan Burrows had a team-high 30 assists. It was a collective defensive effort for WOU as three student-athletes, Danielle English (24), Mainer (12) and Stephanie Beeler (10), each recorded double figures in digs. Sharon Peterson led the team with three blocks.
"This great day for our team," said head coach Brad Saindon. "We were able to play everyone on our roster as we continue to build team morale and confidence."
Saindon felt this opportunity to play everyone on the roster should help solidify his team. "We are still trying to figure ourselves and our playing time out," said Saindon. "Our starter looked really good, especially in the fourth set, but we have to continue to build team depth."
The Wolves will again play two matches in the same day at the Otter Classic Saturday, Aug. 29. WOU will open against North Dakota at 10:45 a.m., and then face Humboldt State at 5:45 p.m.
"North Dakota is probably the best team we will see in this tournament and Humboldt State is in our region so both these matches will be very important," commented Saindon.
