POMONA, Calif. - The Western Oregon University women's soccer team dropped to 3-3-0 this season as it fell 1-0 to Cal Poly Pomona, Friday, Sept. 13.

The Wolves put forth a gritty effort in the muggy, overcast conditions of Pomona, Calif., as they were outshot 16-3, but managed to stay within striking distance until the final horn.

The game's only goal was score by Britany Garrett in the 61st minute on a well-place header that found its way into the net after a corner kick. Garrett finished the day with seven of the Broncos' 16 shots.

WOU had a chance to respond in the game's 62nd minute, as Melinda Ingalls worked a give-and-go with one of her teammates and beat the last defender for an 18-yard shot but it sailed just over the crossbar. Ingalls had two of the three Wolves' shots, Brenna Lander had the other.

Brittney Rigtrup, starting at goalkeeper for the fourth time this season, had seven saves and allowed only one goal in 90 minutes of play.

Western Oregon's defense kept them in the game the first half as it allowed Cal Poly Pomona only four of its 16 shots. The Wolves were also even with the Broncos in corner kicks in the first half with one apiece.

"It was a very good battle out there today," said head coach Rod Fretz. "It was a very even game which could have gone either way. Cal Poly Pomona is a very opportunistic team with good defense and they were able to get us off our game just enough for the win."

The Western Oregon women's soccer team will now face Cal State San Bernardino, Sunday, Sept. 14, at 12:30 p.m. Last week, Cal Poly Pomona fell at Cal State San Bernardino 3-2.
