Volleyball wins at NNU 3-2

NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Oregon University volleyball team won its seventh straight match as it went on the road to defeat Northwest Nazarene, 26-28, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-11, Thursday, Sept. 25.

The victory moved the Wolves to 9-1 on the season and to 2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference while dropping NNU to 1-2 in the league.

Seniors Kayla Mainer and Stacey Bennett led the WOU offensive and defensive attack as both posted double-doubles with kills and digs. Bennett had a season-high 23 kills to go along with 19 digs. Mainer led the team in digs for the first time this season as she registered 26 in addition to 13 kills. Lisa Martini chipped in with 13 kills and two blocks. Amy Herron also recorded a double-double as she posted 30 assists and 13 digs. Five Wolves finished with double-digit digs.

The first set was back and forth throughout the set with Northwest Nazarene holding the largest lead by four at 7-3. The match was then tied at 26 before Lindsey Forseth had a kill to put NNU up by one and a WOU setting error gave it the first set victory.

Western Oregon jumped to a 12-5 lead on the back of six straight points which included two Bennett kills and three NNU errors. The Wolves would make a last five point run on the back of four Bennett kills, and take the match 25-20.

WOU fell in the third set but then won the fourth and the fifth set to take the match 3-2.

In the fourth with the set tied at 4-4 the Wolves went on a 10-2 run to run out to a 14-6 lead. NNU would fight back to tie the set at 20-20 but WOU took five of the next six points and the set, 25-21.

After dropping the first point in the fifth set, the Western Oregon volleyball team went on a 7-2 run en route to taking the deciding set 15-11.

The team will now travel to Montana State Billings to face the Yellowjackets Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 p.m. (MT).
