Volleyball takes down SMU in four

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University volleyball team earned its second consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory with a four set (26-24, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-22) win over Saint Martin's, Thursday, Oct. 8.

The win pushed the Wolves (7-11, 4-3 GNAC) over .500 in conference for the first time since its opening match. The GNAC loss was the seventh straight for Saint Martin's who fell to 1-13 on the season and to 0-7 in conference.

As a team, Western Oregon posted a .254 hitting percentage (53-22-122) and held Saint Martin's to a .138 mark en route to the victory. The Wolves also outhit the Saint's in all three of their set wins including a .435 mark in the critical third set (13-3-23).

Freshman Irene Walters finished with a career-high 12 kills to lead the team. Middle blocker Lisa Martini once again registered a .500-plus hitting percentage as she hammered down 11 kills in 17 attempts with just two errors for a .529 mark. She also tied Samantha Ward with 2.5 blocks. Joining Walters among the match-leaders for WOU was fellow freshmen Sarah Bain who dished out 31 assists and Ward with 11 kills.

The WOU volleyball team will now take to the road to face Central Washington On Saturday, Oct. 10.
