Laura Sakala recorded 10 kills without an error and
Irene Walters chipped in with 13 as the Western Oregon University volleyball team swept Saint Martin's, 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24, Thursday (Nov. 12), in its final match of the 2009 season.
The win snapped an eight-match losing streak for the Wolves as they ended their season with an 8-19 record and a 5-11 mark in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The loss sent the Saints to 3-22 and 0-15 in conference.
"This was certainly good to be back on the winning side again," said Western Oregon head coach
Brad Saindon. "It was nice to send the season on a positive note."
Even in winning the match with a sweep coach Saindon spoke in high acclaim for seniors

Amy Herron, Lisa Martin and
Laura Sakala. "I want to thank the seniors for everything they have done for the Western Oregon volleyball program during their four great years, and the last two with me as coach. They have taken the program to unprecedented levels; a GNAC championships and consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament."
All four seniors had strong showings in their final contest. Herron had a team-leading 28 assists to go along with 12 digs for her eighth double-double on the season. English led four Wolves in double-figure digs with 20. Sakala notched her 10 kills on just 21 attempts with no errors for a .476 hitting percentage in the match. She also led the team with three blocks as the WOU outblocked SMU at the net 8-3. Martini recorded three aces in the match and helped account for nine Wolves' points.
Irene Walters registered her third double-double of her freshman season with those match-best 13 kills and also added 13 digs.
The Wolves used a .208 to .075 hitting percentage secure the match. WOU outhit Saint Martin's in each of the three sets.
