MONMOUTH, Ore. - Northwest Nazarene jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never looked back as it defeated Western Oregon 69-47 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference showdown, Thursday, Feb. 26.
The win moved the Crusaders to 16-8 on the year and 9-4 in conference. The loss was the sixth-straight for the Wolves as they fell to 8-16 on the year and 3-10 in the GNAC.
NNU jumped out to the 14-0 lead as it made six of its first 10 shots and WOU failed to convert on its first 10 shot attempts. For the game, WOU shot 26.5 percent from the field (13-of-49) compared to 50 percent for NNU (29-of-58). The Crusaders also held the advantage from behind the arc as it made 6-of-13 shots compared to 2-of-15 for the Wolves.
Katie Torland notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Shayla Corder led the Wolves in scoring with 14 points as she went 5-of-12 from the field. Jennifer Williams and Lindsay Brady both had 15 points to pace NNU.
Northwest Nazarene's other advantage came in points off turnovers, where it outscored Western Oregon 27 to 8. WOU did go 19-of-26 at the free throw line and won the rebounding battle by one (37-36).
The first half was a tale of runs. After jumping in front 14-0, NNU pushed its lead to 17 points as it went on top 20-3 before Western Oregon went on an 8-0 spurt to pull within nine points at 20-11. The Crusaders would continue to hold the lead by nine to 12 points until they went on a 12-4 run to take a 37-20 lead into halftime.
Western Oregon got a free throw to start the second half before NNU went on a 13-2 run to push its lead to 27 points at 50-23. NNU would lead by as many as 28 points in the second half as it went on to the 69-47 victory.
The Western Oregon women's basketball will be at home Saturday, Feb. 28 as it takes on Seattle Pacific at 2:00 p.m. in the second game of its three-game home stand. SPU is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA West Region.
