ELLENBURG, Wash. - Derek Shoemaker went 7.1 innings allowing two runs and seven hits to lead Central Washington to a 4-2 over the Western Oregon University baseball team in the CWU Invitational Saturday, Feb. 28, at Tomlinson Field.
The loss snapped the Wolves three-game winning streak and evened their record at 5-5 on the season as the Wildcats improved to 2-8.
Mike Eisenhauer (0-1) pitched a complete game for WOU giving up four runs, three earned, and six hits to go along with six strikeouts and no walks, in his best performance of the season.
CWU scored in the bottom of the first inning off a leadoff double, a WOU error and a sacrifice bunt to score the run. With the 1-0 lead, Shoemaker would retiring the next 11 Western Oregon hitters.
After the first two batters of the top of the fifth were retired,
Griffin Boyd and
Garrett Breda both singled and
Eric Renander drew a walk bringing
Travis Fox to the plate with runners in scoring position and the chance to tie or take the lead. Fox doubled down the left field line scoring two and giving WOU a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats would immediately tie the game in the bottom of the fifth as Kevin Schneider led off the inning with a home run to knot the game at 2-2.
In the top of sixth,
Justin Speer led off with a single and
Kyle Boe followed with a walk bringing
Bill Clontz to the plate with no outs and runners at first and second. Clontz bunt attempt was caught by Shoemaker who threw to the shortstop covering second base and onto the second baseman at first for the triple play ending the Wolves' threat.
CWU would score the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning on an unearned run as Kevin Walkenhauer led off with a double and scored on a dropped fly ball to Western Oregon's left fielder to go on top 3-2.
The Wildcats would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and Robbie Grimm would take over for Shoemaker and pitch the final 1.2 innings for the save.
In the game,
Justin Speer extended his hitting streak to 10 games as he went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Wolves. Leadoff batter
Travis Fox went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs in the game as the only other Western Oregon batter to record a multi-hit game.
