NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Oregon University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Northwest Nazarene, 9-6 and 8-6, Monday, Mar. 23.
The wins moved the Wolves to 9-6 on the season and to 2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as the Crusaders fell to 6-11 and 0-6 in the GNAC.
Game 1
Western Oregon scored five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by
Justin Speer, as it went on to capture game one 9-6.
In the second inning, with two outs and a runner at first
Travis Fox singled and
Eric Renander reached on an error loading the bases for
Jason Moseby. He delivered a two-run single, giving WOU the 2-0 lead and extending the inning.
Justin Speer then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to give the Wolves the 5-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher
Blake Keitzman (2-0) would take over from there, as he went 6.2 innings giving up three runs and six hits while striking five for the win.
"It is always tough when you have to play at NNU," explained Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "Kietzman set the tone early and even though we left a lot of runners on we got hits to extend the lead."
Speer went 3-for-5 in the game with the home run, two doubles and four RBI. Moseby was 2-for-4 with three RBI and
Kyle Boe would add a home run in the seventh inning, his second of the season.
Game 2
Griffin Boyd hit a key home run in WOU's six-run fourth inning to lead the Wolves to an 8-6 win in game two.
NNU jumped in front 4-0 after two innings thanks in part to two Western Oregon errors which allowed two unearned runs to score.
In the fourth, after Moseby led off with a double, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and matching the longest in the GNAC this season,
Justin Speer drew a walk and was cut down at second on a fielder' choice groundout by
Kyle Boe putting runners at first and third for
Thomas McCarthy who singled to score Moseby.
Garrett Breda then doubled scoring Boe and advancing McCarthy to third.
Griffin Boyd then hit a three-run home run to put the Wolves up 5-0. WOU then reload the bases in the inning and tacked on another run when Moseby was hit by a pitch.
WOU would add insurance runs in the in the fifth on a home run by McCarthy and another in the sixth when Breda was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Eisenhauer (1-1) started and earned the win for the Wolves.
"We battled back with Boyd's big home run and Eisenhauer shut the door on them after that," Robbins noted.
"It was phenomenon team effort getting back out there after such a long time off," continued Robbins.
