NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Oregon baseball team took both games of a doubleheader from Northwest Nazarene, 14-6 and 6-4, Tuesday, Mar. 24, to sweep the four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series.
With the wins the Wolves moved to 11-6 on the year and to 4-0 in the GNAC while the Crusaders dropped to 6-13 and 0-8 in conference.
Game 1
WOU matched a season-best with 17 hits en route to taking game one 14-6. Five different Western Oregon batters registered a multi-hit game led by
Bill Clontz who went 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Wolves broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. WOU loaded the bases with one out for
Kyle Boe who singled to score two and take a 2-1 lead over NNU. After a Clontz fly out,
Thomas McCarthy doubled to drive in two more and then scored on a
Taylor Mieras' home run to put Western Oregon up 6-1.
WOU starter
Jacob Pettit improved to 3-0 on the season as he went 7.1 innings giving up 11 hits and four runs while striking out five.
Jason Moseby went 1-for-2 in the game to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest in the GNAC this season. The top three spots in the Wolves' order combined to go 7-for-13 with five walks and seven runs scored in the game. McCarthy and Mieras led the team with three RBI apiece as Boe and Clontz each added two.
Game 2
Western Oregon used a four-run third inning to take game two 6-4.
After
Travis Fox and
Justin Thornton led off the third inning with singles
Jason Moseby drew a walk to load the bases.
Kyle Boe then hit a sacrifice fly to score Fox and bring
Joe Pratt to the plate. Pratt doubled to clear the bases and would score the Wolves' fourth run of the inning on a
Thomas McCarthy RBI single.
Three pitchers combined to work the seven innings.
Chad Lynch started the game and lasted 3.1 innings giving up two runs and four hits while walking three and striking out four. He gave way to
Brad Carter (2-0) who went three innings allowing two runs and three hits to pick up his second win of the season.
Kirk Lind would be called on to get the final two outs of the game.
WOU jumped in front 2-0 before NNU had come to bat as
Bill Clontz homered to drive in Fox in the top of the first.
Fox was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Boe also went 2-for-3 as was the only other WOU player to record a multi-hit game.
"I was very impressed with our club for the four-game series following the layoff," explained Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "We pitched well and got timely hitting. These guys are on a mission and it was a complete team effort."
Next Game
The Western Oregon University baseball team will now return home to face Central Washington in a four-game series beginning Saturday Mar. 28, at 1:00 p.m.
"We will now focus on this weekend," continued Robbins. "Every series in the GNAC is huge for us."
