WOU takes doubleheader from CWU

MONMOUTH, Ore.
- The Western Oregon University baseball team scored 24 runs in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep of Central Washington, Sunday Mar. 29.

With the wins Western Oregon remained in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference at 6-0 while moving to 13-6 on the season. The losses dropped Central Washington to 6-16 on the season and 2-8 in conference.

Game 1
Jason Moseby hit a bases clearing three-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie as Western Oregon would come from behind to take game one 7-5.

Justin Speer led the way for the Wolves at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Eric Renander was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored to go along with a stolen base.

Western Oregon was down 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, when Renander blasted the first pick he saw over the left field wall to cut the Wildcats' lead in half.

Speer would tie the game up in the fourth inning on a solo homer to center to even the game at two runs apiece.

CWU took the lead back in the top of the sixth on a solo shot by Kevin Walkenhauer before WOU answered back in their half of the inning with a on an RBI single by Kyle Boe.

Western Oregon would take the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. After a Taylor Mieras single and a walk to Renander, Travis Fox put a sacrifice bunt down between the Wildcats' pitcher and third baseman, in which the pitcher tried to get the runner at third but Mieras beat the throw loading the bases. Jason Moseby then took Derek Shoemaker's pitch the gap in left center field to clear the bases. He would score on a single by Justin Speer to put WOU in front 7-4.

Four pitchers worked the game for the Wolves as Jesse Nunley (3-1) earned the win and Greg Bobnick his second save.

The game began in the bottom of the third inning because the game was postponed from Saturday, Mar. 28, due to rain.

Game 2
Western Oregon scored in all six of its at bats including 10 runs in the fourth as it went on to win game two 24-9 and sweep the doubleheader.

JJ Mascolo and Justin Speer were the stars for the Wolves at the plate as Mascolo went 4-for-5 with a home run, six RBI and three runs scored and Speer was 2-for-2 with five RBI and had a crucial three-run double in the fourth inning to break the game open for Western Oregon.

The game was tied at 6-6 entering the Wolves' half of the inning before WOU sent 13 runners to the plate and pushed across 10 runs, as six different batters collected an RBI.

The game was sloppy early as both teams battled harsh weather conditions. CWU jumped in front 3-0 after a half inning while managing just one hit. Western Oregon would get one back in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Justin Speer to score Jason Moseby and would take the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Mascolo.

The Wildcats answered back with three runs in the third before the Wolves tied it again with two in the fourth.

Western Oregon would break the game open with its 10-run fourth inning and then added three more in the fifth and another five in the sixth.

In the game, Fourteen Western Oregon batters collected hits WOU put up 24 as a team, the most in the GNAC this season. The 24 runs scored are also the most by a GNAC team since Western Oregon scored 25 against NNU Apr. 15, 2005.

Steven Brock (1-0) earned the win for Western Oregon as he went 2.2 innings while allowing two hits and striking out three in relief.

Next Game
The two teams will continue their series Monday Mar. 30, with another doubleheader beginning at noon.
