MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University baseball team received a pair of strong pitching performances by its starters as it was able to sweep a doubleheader from Northwest Nazarene Friday, Apr. 24, taking game one 5-3 and game two 5-2.
The wins pushed the Wolves record to 28-10 on the season and to 19-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as the Crusaders dropped to 12-25 and 5-17 in conference.
Game 1
Blake Keitzman worked seven innings giving up three hits and one run while striking out five and
Justin Speer went 3-for-4 as Western Oregon took game one 5-3.
After a first inning in which NNU took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single, Keitzman would face just two batters over the minimum, which included inducing two double plays.
After putting up single runs in the third and the fourth innings, the Wolves broke through with three runs in the seventh.
Jason Moseby and
Justin Speer led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, then the Wolves loaded the bases and
Garrett Breda delivered a two-run single through the left side to put WOU in front 5-1.
All 11 of Western Oregon's hits came from five members of their starting lineup as
Travis Fox,
Thomas McCarthy, Moseby and Breda all had two hits to go along with the three from Speer.
Game 2
Mike Eisenhauer struck out 10 in seven innings as Western Oregon took game two 5-2.
After a shaky first inning in which Eisenhauer gave up both runs and four NNU hits, he surrendered only two base runners the rest of the game. He had a stretch of eight consecutive batters retired to end the game.
Travis Fox led the Wolves at the plate going 2-for-3 with two runs scored while
Thomas McCarthy also collected two hits. Four different players had an RBI for WOU as
Eric Renander,
Bill Clontz, JJ Mascolo and McCarthy each knocked in a run.
"They hit us early but we kept our composure and stuck with the game plan," Western Oregon head baseball coach Jeremiah Robbins said. "You can't panic when things don't go right early and you just have to take the emotional side out of it.
"NNU is a good club and don't let that record fool you," continued Robbins. "They have good speed and quality pitchers on the mound."
Next Game
These two teams will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 25) at noon.
