MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon baseball team used 19 hits and 16 runs to defeat Saint Martin's 16-10 Wednesday, Apr. 29 and extend its Great Northwest Athletic Conference road winning streak to eight games.
The Wolves are now 30-11 on the season and have already clinched its eight-straight GNAC championship with a 21-3 record
Every member of the WOU starting lineup collected a hit.
Thomas McCarthy went 4-for-5 with three RBI and
Travis Fox was 3-for-6 with four RBI to lead a Western Oregon offense which put 24 runners on base.
Despite all the base runners, this was a close game until the top of the eighth inning. After Western Oregon scored one run in the first and three more in the second to take a 4-1 lead, SMU scored a run in the bottom of the second to pull within two runs at 4-2. WOU would add one in the seventh on a solo home run by
Garrett Breda before putting up five runs in the eighth and another six in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Starter
Greg Bobnick earned his first victory of the season as he went five innings allowing four hits and one run.
Brad Carter took over in the sixth and would pitch three innings allowing just two hits and one run.
"That was a really good pitching performance by Bobnick and Carter," Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins said. "Our hitters responded to that and put some runs on the board for the victory."
The 16 runs are the most WOU has scored in 17 games since it put up 16 runs in both games of a doubleheader against Montana State Billings Apr. 3.
Next, the Wolves will travel to Ellensburg, Wash., for a four-game series with Central Washington May 2-3.
