Mesa State tops Western in three

Box Score DENVER - The Western Oregon volleyball team lost its second straight match at the Premier Challenge in Denver, this time to Metro State 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23.

The loss guarantees that WOU will participate in the Bronze Pool of the Premier Challenge against Augustana beginning Saturday (Sept. 5) at noon. The loss also drops the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions to 1-5 on the season as Metro State moved to 5-0.

Freshman Danielle Reese led the Wolves with eight kills while Cally Young notched a team-best 14 digs. Amy Herron and Jorden Burrows each got into double-figures in assists as Herron recorded 13 and Burrows added 12.

For the second straight match the Wolves were outhit, this time .361 to .184. MSU hit over .350 in all three sets.

In the first set, Metro State took advantage of a slow start by WOU as it jumped out to a 15-5 lead and cruised to the 25-12 win. Western Oregon was also slow out of the gate in the second set but battled back to within one point at 17-16 before Metro State took eight of the next nine points to go up 2-0 in the set. In the third set, WOU was up 23-22 but MSU scored the final three points for the three-set win.
