MONMOUTH, Ore. – Freshman midfielder,
Taylor Thompson has 'taken it to the net' for her third consecutive match with a goal. However, Thompson's goal would not be enough to lift Western Oregon over Simon Fraser as it fell 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 14.
Today, Thompson's goal, assisted by
Marina Austin in the second half, was the first goal of the game following a nil-nil first half. Thompson found herself in a lucrative position: all alone, at the right side of the Simon Fraser box. After receiving a precision pass from Austin, Thompson capitalized on the advantage and placed the ball into the left side of the SFU goal. In the last three games, Thompson has recorded one game-winning goal against Northwest Nazarene, and one goal apiece in the matches against Saint Martin's and Simon Fraser.
In the last 10 minutes, an untimely own-goal gave Simon Fraser (5-3-2, 4-2-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) a point on the board, evening the score at 1-1. Shortly after, with five minutes left, the Clan scored a second goal ,bringing the final score to a 2-1 loss for Western Oregon (2-10-0, 1-7-0 GNAC). The goal came from a SFU free-kick in the Wolves' half. The free-kick was taken by Stephanie Pagliaro and was finished by Ari Adams, who headed it into the far post corner.
The Wolf defense allowed the Clan no corner kicks while the Wolf offense controlled a length of the game by maintaining possession and launching 11 shots at SFU.
“Our defense gave [SFU] very few opportunities,” recounted head coach Rod Fretz. “We just got anxious towards the end.”
Thompson now ranks fifth in Great Northwest Athletic Conference game-winning goals. Austin is at GNAC No. 3 in shots taken (28 total) and is No. 4 in shots per game with 3.50.
The Wolves will stay home once again for their next match against Western Washington on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
