Crusaders sneak past Wolves in OT

NAMPA, Idaho - The Wolves started fast and fierce during their match against the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders, scoring in the second minute of the game. WOU forward, Katrina Kem, had precision from her five yard spot, placing the ball inside the left post from Jill Petersen's cross. Ultimately, Western could not hold onto the initial lead, falling to Northwest Nazarene in overtime, 3-2 (Oct. 21).

Ten minutes into the game, NNU responded with a low 30-yard shot inside the right post from Sarah Staropoli, who was assisted by Jessie Cahill. At the 32nd minute, Staropoli had her second goal of the match after an unfortunate deflection off of the keeper. Staropoli was assisted by Julianne Steele four yards away from the goal line, ending the first half ahead of WOU 2-1.

Only 54 seconds into the second half, Western's defender, Petersen, pushed in a second goal for the Wolves from the middle of the Crusaders' goal box. Petersen's goal came off of Rebecca Hoiland's seven-yard out free kick, putting the Wolves back into the game at 2-2.

Neither WOU (2-12-0, 1-9-0 GNAC) nor NNU (5-9-0, 3-7-0 GNAC) could score after Western's 54th goal during the second half, bringing on an overtime period. With less than a minute left in overtime, Crusaders' Autumn Yturbe and Kendra Courcy assisted Lacey Thompson pulling off a game-winning goal. The NNU goal came from a keeper deflection at the top of the box ending with a 3-2 WOU loss.

Western struggled offensively with 11 offsides total by the end of the match, however, they where able to take 12 shots placing nine on target.

The lady Wolves will play at home for their next match against Montana State Billings on Saturday, Oct. 23 at noon.
