BILLINGS, Mont. - Ever since
Grant Glover was inserted into the leadoff spot 16 games ago the Western Oregon baseball team has not lost a game and he has collected a hit in each contest.
In the Wolves most recent doubleheader sweep of Montana State Billings, Saturday (Apr. 17), Glover went 4-for-10 with three runs scored and four RBI, as WOU won game one 16-4 and game two 6-3.
With the Western Oregon's (26-11, 21-3 GNAC) recent surge it has pulled to within one game of the GNAC record for most consecutive wins, which was set by the 2006 WOU squad. The losses dropped Montana State Billings to 8-28 on the season and 7-17 in the GNAC.
Game 1
Grant Glover got the offense rolling as he deposited the first pitch of the game over the left field wall for a home run. The Wolves' would go on to score in six of the first seven innings to earn a 16-4 win.
Brett Davis, making his second start of the season, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the win.
Cesar Lopez (2-for-4) also knocked in three runs while
Kyle Boe scored three times.
Daniel Dillard,
Devon Bouvier,
Garrett Breda and Glover would all add two runs scored apiece, and
Cody Reeves and Bouvier each collected three hits.
That was more that enough support for Wolves' starter
Jacob Pettit who went seven innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out two. He lowered his GNAC leading ERA to 2.08 in the process.
Game 2
The Wolves got a new challenge in game two. After never trailing the first 25 innings of the series, WOU fell behind 3-1 after three innings, before coming back, by putting three on the board in the fifth and two more in the sixth, to take game two 6-3.
After
Cesar Lopez pulled the Wolves to within one (3-2) on a solo shot in the fifth,
Grant Glover connected on a two-run homer later in the inning to give WOU the 4-3 lead. Western Oregon would add two more in the sixth on a two-run shot by
Andrew Irvine, as five of its six runs came via the long ball.
Kyle Boe,
Daniel Dillard and Glover each collected two hits for WOU to account for six of the team's eight hits in the game.
Gavin Hite picked up his first career win as he took over for
Jerad Thompson to begin the second inning. He pitched three innings allowing three hits and one run to earn the victory.
Kirk Lind went the last three innings to pick up his third save of the year. He gave up two hits and one walk while striking out one.
Brian Howe (1-8) went the distance for MSU Billings and took loss. He was charged with all six runs and eight hits while walking one and striking out a pair.
"It was a good overall weekend for our guys," said Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "I really liked the way we focused and played as a team.
"It was one of the better weekends of the season and a resilient for our guys," continued Robbins. "We are now getting excited to get back home and start preparing for Chico State."
Next games
The Wolves will face the Chico State Wildcats in a four-game series Apr. 23-25, in Chico, Calif. The teams will play one game on Friday, two on Saturday and another on Sunday.
