CHICO, Calif. - One of the two streaks the Western Oregon University baseball team carried into the doubleheader with Chico State continued, however the most important one did not.
Grant Glover was able to extend his hitting 21 games as he collected a hit in each contest, but the No. 6 regionally ranked Wolves dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 4 Chico State to halt their winning streak at 17 games. WOU was shutout 4-0 in game one and fell 6-5 in game two.
The Wolves' (27-13, 21-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) winning streak matched their own school record which they set in 2006 and the losses were the first for the team in over a month (Mar. 14). The back-to-back wins ended a four-game slide for the Wildcats (29-16).
Game 1
Casey Edelbrock (5-3) went the distance in a 4-0 win, allowing seven hits and no walks while striking out four, for his second shutout and third complete game of the season.
Chico State scored two in the fourth and two more in the seventh to aid Edelbrock's effort. In the fourth, Chico State scored on a one-out, bases-loaded single by Ben Manlove and a squeeze play by Jordan Larson. In the seventh, it was a sacrifice fly by Michael Murphy and Deven Braden scoring on a passed ball.
Braden, Manlove and Johnny Hay each had two hits for the Wildcats, who outhit the Wolves 10-7 in the game.
Jason Moseby collected his fourth double of the series and went 3-for-4 in the game for WOU.
Devon Bouvier was 2-for-3 in the contest, as the duo accounted for five of the Wolves' seven hits.
Blake Keitzman (6-3) pitched his sixth complete game of the season in the loss. He went eight innings, allowing 10 hits, three walks and four runs (three earned), while striking out six. He also induced four double plays.
Game 2
Chico State scored one in the sixth and one in the seventh to come back from 5-4 deficit to take game two 6-5.
The Wildcats put the leadoff man on via a single in both innings and were able to push him around the bases to earn the win. In the sixth it was Jordan Larson scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Seaver and in the seventh it Deven Braden singling in the pinch runner Michael Schultz.
The Wolves had erased a 4-0 lead by Chico State with three runs in the fourth and one apiece in the fifth and sixth to take their first lead of the game.
Daniel Dillard got the Wolves on the board in the fourth with a three-run homer to left, and then added an RBI-single in the fifth.
Grant Glover put WOU in front with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Dillard finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI and the home run.
Aaron Headrick was the only other Wolf to record a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-4.
Jordan Lindebaum (1-1) earned the win in relief for Chico State, while
Kirk Lind (3-3) was saddled with the loss.
"We didn't play well today, and didn't get the big hits when we needed them," explained Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "This was not our day and we gave them too many opportunities.
"We will refocus and get back to it tomorrow," said Robbins.
