CHICO, Calif. - Western Oregon's hopes for a bid into the NCAA West Regional took a hit on Sunday (Apr. 25), as it dropped the final game of its four-game series against Chico State 6-2.
The No. 6 Wolves (27-14, 21-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) lost three of the four games in the series to No. 4 Chico State (30-16). The top four teams in the final West Region poll advance to the regional playoffs.
Western Oregon jumped out to the early 2-0 lead, as
Jason Moseby and
Daniel Dillard each went deep in the opening two frames. However, this would be all the scoring the Wolves would get. Chico State fought back to tie the game with single runs in the fourth and the fifth, then took the lead in the seventh with a two-run homer off the bat of Jackson Evans.
Evans finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored. Jordan Larsen also had three hits and Ben Manlove added two, as Chico State outhit WOU 12-7.
Grant Glover and
Devon Bouvier both went 2-for-4 for the Wolves. The hits by Glover extended his hitting streak to 22 games, the third longest in the history of the GNAC. Dillard's home run was his 14th of the season, and tied him with Chris Ridenour and Andy Ortmayer for the WOU single-season record.
Scott Greene (3-3) earned the win for the Wildcats with a complete game performance. He allowed seven hits, one walk and two runs, while striking out five.
Western Oregon will now return to Monmouth for its final homestand of the season. Central Washington will come to town for a four-game set May 1-2. Sunday will also be Senior Day for 15 Wolves.
