KEIZER, Ore. - The Western Oregon baseball team extended its winning streak in Great Northwest Athletic Conference games to 18 straight with a doubleheader sweep of Central Washington, Saturday (May 1). The Wolves won the first 9-7 and the second 6-5.
The wins also clinched the ninth-straight GNAC Championship for the Wolves (29-14, 23-3 GNAC). The losses dropped CWU to 11-33 on the season and 5-21 in the conference.
Grant Glover also extended his hitting streak to 24 games in the wins.
Game 1
Kyle Boe came up a double short of the cycle, as he went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and a stolen base. After making an out in his first at-bat he then singled in to straight at-bats before adding a triple and a homer.
Boe was one of six Wolves to record a multi-hit game and WOU outhit CWU 18-12.
Jason Moseby went 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored, and
Bill Clontz was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Devon Bouvier,
Daniel Dillard and
Cesar Lopez all collected two hits apiece. Bouvier also knocked in three runs and Dillard one.
Kirk Lind (4-3) earned the win in relief of
Michael Ward. He went the last three innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out two. Ward fanned nine Wildcats in six innings and Western pitchers struck out 11 compared to four for CWU.
WOU jumped out to a 5-2 lead after five inning, but Central Washington put up four runs in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead and knock Ward out of the game. However, the Wolves show resiliency by tying the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Cody Reeves led off the inning with a triple to left center then scored on an RBI groundout by
Garrett Breda.
In the seventh, WOU got two runs to take the lead. Boe led off the inning with a triple, and with one out Bouvier tripled to the same spot in left center field to give the Wolves a 7-6 lead. Bouvier would score later in the inning on a suicide squeeze by
Bill Clontz to put WOU in from for good at 8-6.
Game 2
Kyle Boe scored on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of
Daniel Dillard in the bottom of the seventh inning to give WOU a 6-5 win.
Boe, who went 2-for-3 in the game with three runs scored to finish the day 6-of-8, led off the inning with a triple and was able to walk home when Dillard lifted the ball to deep center field.
That was the second run batted in of the game for Dillard, who ended the game 3-for-4 with a double.
Jason Moseby also knocked in two runs with a first inning two-run homer to right center.
Blake Keitzman tossed his eighth straight complete game to earn his GNAC-leading seventh win of the season. He finished the game with nine hits allowed, five runs (two earned) while striking out eight and walking no one.
"Our guys refused to lose," said WOU head coach Jeremiah Robbins.
