MONMOUTH, Ore. -
Jacob Pettit pitched a complete game shutout in game one and
Jason Moseby came up with a game-winning single in game two, as Western Oregon took both games from Central Washington on Senior Day (Sunday, May 2). The Wolves won game one 4-0 and then captured game two 3-2.
The nine-time defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference Champion Wolves (31-14, 25-3) extended their record breaking conference winning streak to 20 games with the four-game sweep. The losses dropped Central Washington to 11-35 on the season and 5-23 in league play.
In the wins,
Grant Glover tied the GNAC hitting streak record of 26 held by former WOU player Joey Price. Glover singled in the fifth in game one and to lead off the first in game two to keep his streak alive.
Game 1
Jacob Pettit (6-1) tossed a six-hit, complete game shutout while striking out nine and walking no one to lead WOU to a 4-0 win in game one. The shutout was the first of the senior's career and he lowered his GNAC-leading ERA to 2.05 in the process. The Wildcats only had one inning in which two runners were on base at the same time (the ninth), and no CWU runner advanced past second.
Kyle Boe and
Bill Clontz both knocked in two runs and went 2-for-4 to carry the offense.
Daniel Dillard scored two runs and
Devon Bouvier was 2-for-3.
The Wolves put up one run in the second on Clontz's single to left to score Dillard from second, then added one more in the sixth as Clontz once again singled to left to plate Dillard. Boe would provide WOU with two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when he singled up the middle with two outs and the bases loaded.
"Pettit does what Pettit does," explained Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "He filled up the strike zone and kept Central off the board all day.
"We know we always will get a good effort out of him and he kept us in the game until our hitters responded," continued Robbins.
Game 2
Daniel Dillard tied the game with a mammoth two-run homer in the sixth to set up
Jason Moseby for a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, WOU got a lead off double from
Kyle Boe bringing
Daniel Dillard to the plate. Dillard crushed a 1-2 offering by Jake Hammons deep over the left field wall for his school-record 15th home run of the season, tying the game at 2-2. That home run was also the 55th of the year for the Wolves to break the single-season of 54, which was set in Robbins first season (2006).
Dillard's blast set the dramatic bottom of the seventh for Western Oregon.
Garrett Breda led off the inning with a single and
Aaron Headrick then entered the game to run for him. The next batter,
Grant Glover, then tried to sacrifice him to second he popped the bunt up to the pitcher and Headrick was doubled off first.
Cesar Lopez then stepped into the box and grounded to third base. However, the Wildcats' third baseman did not handle the grounder allowing Lopez to reach first on the error. He was then balked down to second base bringing the senior Moseby to the plate. Moseby rocketed a grounder through the left side of the infield and the fellow senior Lopez scampered home, sliding headfirst ahead of the throw, for the game-winning run to cap off a dramatic Senior Day.
Cam Nobles went the first 6.1 innings for WOU, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out three. He then gave way to
Jesse Nunley with one out and a runner on second in the top of the seventh. Nunly (4-0) retired the next two batters without a ball getting out of the infielder to earn the win in relief.
"These were two straight outing by
Cam Nobles," said Robbins. "Nunley also got us some good outs out of the pen."
Jake Hammons (1-2) went the distance for CWU. He gave up nine hits and three runs (two earned) and was charged with the loss an unearned run.
Dillard was the only Wolf to record a multi-hit game, as he went 2-for-3. Marcus Evans collected two of the Wildcats' seven hits in the game.
"Our GNAC opponents come in ready to play us," explained Robbins. "The more GNAC titles we win the bigger the bull's eye gets on our back.
"We will have a short turnaround this week and get focused on Saint Martin's," continued Robbins.
