MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University volleyball team suffered its second straight loss at the hands of a top 10 team as it fell to Metro State in four sets 22-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20, in the morning session of the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge Saturday, Sept. 4.
The win was the second straight for No. 10 Metro State (2-1). With the loss WOU evened its record at 2-2 on the season.
Danielle Reese registered a season-high with 17 kills in the match, including six in the first set. She also posted 13 digs to record her first double-double of the season.
Jorden Burrows led the Wolves in assists for the fourth straight match with 31.
Megan Triggs had a career-high with 14 digs.
"The positive thing to come out of this is we came out (with a set win) against the No. 10 team even after making it difficult at the end," said Western Oregon head coach
Brad Saindon. "Metro stepped it up and we couldn't or didn't respond."
The Wolves jumped out the early lead with a 25-22 victory in the first set. They were behind 21-20 but put together a 5-1 run to close the set with the win. The set featured 11 ties and four lead changes.
After that things did not go as well for Western Oregon as it dropped the next three sets.
Although Metro served well and played good defense," Saindon said. "But we lost part of our edge after that first set."
"Getting better is all a process and hope this is a step that will make us better," Saindon noted.
Western Oregon will face another top 10 team tonight when it squares off against No. 8 UC San Diego at 8:00 p.m.
