HILO, Hawaii -
Kyle Long led five Wolves in double figures to lift Western Oregon to its first win of the season with an 83-61 victory at Hawaii Hilo in the final game of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 12.
Long hit 7-of-11 shots, and 2-of-3 from behind the arc, to help Western Oregon shoot 54.5 percent from the field.
Kolton Nelson came through with a double-double. He grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Wolves built a 42-17 lead at halftime thanks to a strong defensive effort. They held the Vulcans to 6-of-26 shooting in the first half and 0-of-8 from 3-point range. For the game UHH hit just 2-of-19 from long range.
Western Oregon trailed only once in the game (3-2) and went on runs of 11-0 and 8-0 in the opening period. The Vulcans would get no closer than 18 points in the second half. WOU also limited UHH to just five assists on its 17 made baskets.
Blair Wheadon came through with four steals and 12 points, as he hit all seven of his shots from the charity stripe.
Jordan Freelander and
Kris White added 10 points apiece as each his all four of their shots from the field.
Zachary Wilde led Hawaii Hilo with 13 points.
This win was also the first of head coach
Brady Bergeson's career.
The Wolves will now prepare for their first home games of the season when they host Cal State East Bay (Nov. 18) and Augustana (Nov. 19) in the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout.
