This weekend
The Western Oregon men's basketball team will host the annual WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 shootout, on Nov. 18-19. The Wolves will see action on Friday, Nov. 18th, against Cal State Eastbay at 7:30 p.m., and then Augustana on Saturday, Nov. 19th, at 5:30 p.m.
The Wolves
The Wolves are off to a 1-1 record as they split the GNAC/PacWest Challenge in Hawaii. They picked up a win against Hawaii Hilo, 83-61 (Nov. 12th), and a loss the day before to Chaminade, 69-53 (Nov. 11th).
Kyle Long was the leader for the Wolves in the win against Hawaii Hilo, as he led five Wolves to double figures. He hit 7-of-11 shots, with 2-of-3 from behind the arc; while WOU shot 54.5 percent from the field.
Kolton Nelson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and matched it with 10 points en route to a double-double.
Blair Wheadon chipped in 12 points with four steals, while hitting all of his shots from the free throw line.
Jordan Freelander and
Kris White put in 10 points each.
New coach in town
With the win against the Vulcans,
Brady Bergeson has now recorded his first win of coaching career.
Cal State Eastbay
The Pioneers enter their game against Western Oregon with a record of 1-0. They still have one more game to play on Nov. 16th, against Academy of Art in San Francisco.
This year Cal State Eastbay returns five players form the 2010-11 squad, a team that finished 4-22 overall, and 2-20 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The duo of senior Roshun Wynne and junior Mark Samuels return for Cal State Eastbay this season. Wynne ranked 15th in the CCAA with 12.1 ppg. He was also second in the conference with 2.2 steals a game, and seventh with 2.9 assists.
This will be the first time these two schools have played against each other.
A look at Augustana
The Vikings are 1-0 coming into the weekend and are ranked No. 16 in the country. They opened the season with a 64-63 win over the University of Sioux Falls. Cody Schilling led the way with 28 points. They shot 53.2 percent from the field in the contest.
Augustana (Sioyux Falls, S.D.) was picked to win the Northern Sun INntercollegiate Conference. It received nine of the 14 first place votes by the coaches. Last season they finished the year 18-9 overall and 15-7 in the NSIC. The Vikings return four staters and three other reserves that played significant roles last year.
This will be the first meeting between the Vikings and the Wolves.
