ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Anchorage junior forward Hanna Johansson recorded 24 points and 14 rebounds, leading the host Seawolves to a 71-47 victory over the Western Oregon women's basketball team Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
The Wolves (9-13, 7-7 GNAC) were led by sophomore guard
Hannah Whitsett's 13 points on four of six shooting. Whitsett (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston) also connected on three of five three-pointers. Senior guard
Sara Zahler (Newberg, Ore./Newberg) registered 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Junior guard
Jade Haas (Elma, Wash./Elma) added a season-high eight points to go along with five rebounds.
The game was WOU's fourth in seven days, having played Simon Fraser and No. 7 Western Washington before traveling to Alaska for a pair of games.
“To be coming out of this stretch of games at 2-2 speaks volume about these young women,” WOU head coach Greg Bruce said. “To play four games in seven days is difficult enough, but when two of them are in Alaska, it makes it that much harder. I'm extremely proud of the girls for battling.”
Alaska Anchorage (21-5, 12-3 GNAC) led 34-16 at halftime before going up by as many as 35 in the second half.
Despite the loss, Western clinched its first-ever postseason berth since transitioning to NCAA Division II in 2000-01. The Wolves are now guaranteed to finish no worse than seventh in the GNAC. The top eight teams qualify for postseason play.
Western Oregon will play its final two home games next week when it hosts GNAC foes Seattle Pacific Thursday, Feb.17, and Montana State Billings Saturday, Feb. 19. Game times are set for 5:15 pm PST and 2:00 pm PST, respectively.
