WOU takes down LCSC and CWU

LEWSTON, Idaho - The Western Oregon baseball team received strong performances by their starting pitchers to win a pair of games, including defeating NAIA perennial power Lewis-Clark State, at the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 19).

The Wolves (5-6) opened the day with a nail-biting 5-2 win over the No. 4 ranked Warriors and followed that with a 7-3 win over Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe, Central Washington.

Game 1

Cam Nobles allowed just one unearned run and four hits over six innings and Aaron Headrick tripled home the go-ahead runs to earn the Wolves a 5-2 victory over Lewis-Clark State.

Nobles (1-1) gave up just four hits and struck out four en route to earning his first win of the season.

After he came out of the game to start the bottom of seventh, Lewis-Clark State was able to put the next three runners on against Travis Bradshaw. However, with his back against the wall Bradshaw responded by getting a sacrifice fly, a strike out and a line out to get out of the inning with just one run allowed.

The Wolves broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth on a two-out triple by Headrick which plated Miles Kizer and Andy Fox, who had both drawn two-out walks preceding Headrick's at-bat.

WOU would add two insurance runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Andre Royal and a sacrifice fly by Griffin Boyd.

Kirk Lind then pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his third save of the season.

Western Oregon outhit LCSC 10-7. Grant Glover went 2-for-5 for WOU and was the only Wolf to record a multi-hit game.

Game 2
Michael Ward gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out four to lift Western Oregon over Central Washington, 7-3.

Four Wolves recorded multi-hit games including Griffin Boyd who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Michael Chiarelli, Grant Glover and Miles Kizer each collected two hits apiece.

Western Oregon scored two runs in each of the first two innings and three more in the seventh as they never trailed in the game.

After CWU cut WOU's lead to 4-3, Glover walked to leadoff the seventh then Chiarelli, Daniel Dillard and Kizer had consecutive run scoring hits to bring home three insurance runs for the Wolves.

Brad Carter then entered the game and pitched three scoreless innings while allowing just two hits for his first save of the season.

Next games
The Western Oregon baseball team will be off next week before opening up its home schedule and 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference season Mar. 5, against Central Washington.
