LEWISTON, Idaho - Western Oregon's bats broke out for a season-high 16 runs as the Wolves capped off the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament with a 16-7 win over Saint Martin's.
This was the third straight win for Western Oregon, which evened its season record at 6-6.
"For us to come back and win three straight, including beating (Lewis-Clark State), is big," explained Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins.
Daniel Dillard went 5-for-6 with a homer and two runs batted in and
Aaron Headrick had three runs scored and three RBI to lead the offensive assault for WOU. Griffin Boyd also chipped in with three RBI, while
Miles Kizer and
Tim Rausch each added two.
It was a collective effort for the Wolves on the mound today, as they used six pitchers in the win.
Kevin Gamble started the game and went the first three innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out three.
Gavin Hite did not allow a hit in his 1.1 innings of work before giving way to
Zach Miller (1-0), who earned the win after throwing 1.2 innings.
Western Oregon built an 8-2 lead after five innings but Saint Martin's would not go away. They scored one in the sixth and four in the eighth to cut the Wolves' lead to 9-7.
WOU then batted around and put seven runs on the board in their half of the eighth to seal the game. Dillard's leadoff solo home run and Griffin Boyd had a bases clearing three-run double highlighted the scoring in the inning for Western.
"I liked the way our hitters responded today," Robbins said. "Whenever (Saint Martin's) looked to get back in it our hitters would answer with runs the next inning."
Western Oregon will be off next weekend before resuming play on Mar. 5th as it hosts home and Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener as part of a doubleheader against Central Washington. This will also be the first game played on the Wolves' new field turf.
