LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego scored two unearned runs in the first inning and Tim Shibuya threw seven innings of one-run ball to lift the No. 1 Tritons over the Wolves 4-1, in the first of a four game series.
Grady Wood allowed four runs (two unearned) while striking out four and allowing four hits in seven innings in his Wolves' debut.
Grant Glover and
Aaron Headrick each went 2-for-4 out of the top spots in the lineup. The hit for GLover in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 31 games, dating back to last season.
Both squads had six hits but the Tritons also the beneficiary of two walks, four hit by pitches and five errors by the Wolves.
"Errors and hit by pitches were our Achilles heel," said Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "You can't give a quality team like UC San Diego extra chances."
The Wolves scored their lone run in the sixth inning. Glover and Headrick both singled to lead off the inning, with Glover advancing to third on Headrick's hit. Dillard then drve him home with a sacrifice fly to center. However, Shibuya then got a foul out and a strike out to difuse the rally.
The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 5) beginning at noon.
