LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Western Oregon baseball team is still searching for its first win of the season after dropping a doubleheader to No. 1 nationally ranked UC San Diego, 10-2 and 6-1, on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Grant Glover had a hit in the opener to extend his Great Northwest Athletic Conference hitting streak to 32 games. However, in the second game he went 0-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice to end the streak which dated back to Mar. 14, 2010.
Game 1
Guido Knudson held the Wolves to two runs and eight hits while striking out seven over seven innings to lead the Tritons to a 10-2 win.
Michael Benton went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI for the Tritons. Kyle Saul added three runs batted in.
For the second day in a row, UCSD would take advantage of Western Oregon mistakes. In the third they scored three runs after the first two runners reached on and error and a hit by pitch. They would add four more in the seventh thanks to a pair of leadoff walks.
Western Oregon outhit UC San Diego 9-7. Griffin Boyd was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while
Daniel Dillard and
Grant Glover each went 2-for-4.
Michael Ward (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) and five hits while striking out six over six innings.
Sam Richter struck out the side in the eighth in his Wolves' debut.
Game 2
UC San Diego once again got seven innings out of its starting pitcher as Daniel Simmons pitched a complete game while allowing just three hits and one unearned run to propel the Tritons to a 6-1 win.
UC San Diego again took advantage of Western Oregon's mistakes. UCSD put up two in the third after WOU committed an error to leadoff the inning. It added three more in the fifth thanks to two hit by pitches.
"We need to play more consistent each inning," said Western Oregon head coach Jeremiah Robbins. "You can't give a quality team like UCSD extra opportunities."
Danny Susdorf went 2-for-3 and was the only Triton to record a multi-hit game. Garrett Tuck drove in two runs with a triple in the fifth.
Michael Chiarelli,
Austin Potter and
Tim Rausch each had one hit for the Wolves. Rausch scored the team's only run on a Glover sac fly in the fifth.
"We will be better," continued Robbins. "We know what it takes to compete with a team like this and we have to continue to work on correcting our mistakes.
Next game
Western Oregon will wrap up its four game series against UC San Diego with a single game on Sunday (Feb. 6). First pitch is scheduled for noon.
