Wolves sweep opening doubleheader

BILLINGS, Mont. - The Wolves scored 23 runs in a doubleheader with Montana State Billings to win both games and extend their season-long winning streak to nine games.

The Wolves are now 25-11 on the season and 15-3 in the GNAC. With the losses MSU Billings dropped to 16-21 and 7-15 in the GNAC.

Game 1
Daniel Dillard went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two stolen bases and six runs driven in to lead Western Oregon to a 12-1 win in the opener of a four-game set against Montana State Billings.

Dillard's performance backed the start of Michael Ward, who pitched the first seven runs for the Wolves without allowing a run and giving up just five hits. He also struck out eight and walked just two.

Western Oregon jumped out to an early lead with one in the first and three more in the second to back Ward's strong start.

The game would remain 4-0 Wolves until Western scored four in the top of the seventh. Dillard had recorded two of his RBI on a single with runners at second and third, and then he came in to score on a double by Michael Chiarelli. Chiarelli would cap off the scoring for the Wolves in the inning on a two-out single by Eric Copenhagen.

Dillard recorded the final three of his six RBI in the ninth inning with his eighth home run of the season.

Game 2
Western Oregon scored eight runs in the fifth inning and Cam Nobles earned his third straight win to lift the Wolves over Yellowjackets 11-5.

With the game tied at 3-3 going into the top of the fifth, Western Oregon sent 13 batters to the plate, with each reaching base at least once. After WOU loaded the bases Kevin Clark, Michael Chiarelli and Griffin Boyd drew consecutive walks to put Western Oregon up 6-3.

AJ Royal then put the ball in play on an 0-2 count and reached on a fielder's allowing both Chiarelli and Clark to score. The Wolves would add three unearned runs to end the inning with the 11-3 lead.

Nobles (5-2) then gave WOU back-to-back scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen. In his last three games he has thrown 22 innings, giving up 17 hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out 14.

MSU Billings outhit Western Oregon 10-7, but the Wolves were beneficiaries of eight walks and three hit by pitches.
