SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Everything was looking good for the Wolves heading into the eighth inning with the score tied at 4-4, but then the wheels fell off as Cal Poly Pomona batted around and scored six runs to earn the 10-4 win in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.
The inning began with single by CCAA Player of the Year Travis Taijeron and then Torres tried to sacrifice him to second but the Wolves would not comply as they walked him on five pitches. The following batter Chris Miller also came to the plate looking to sacrifice the runners along. He put down a bunt to the third baseman Griffin Boyd, but his throw pulled
Grant Glover, who was covering first, off the bag to load the bases with no one out.
Tyson Edwards then hit a sacrifice fly to right to give the Broncos a one run lead (5-4). However, they were not done there. Gonzalez hit a ball back up the middle which Wolves' shortstop
Josh Solemsaas got to but was unable to record an out as another run scored for the Broncos. They would add three more in the inning, two of them unearned, with the big blow coming on a double off the bat of Jordan Whitman.
The Wolves had held the lead up until the sixth inning. WOU put up three of its four runs in their half of the first inning to erase the Broncos' 1-0 lead. After the first out of the inning,
Steve Ockerman and
Daniel Dillard both singled to put a runner in scoring position with one out.
Justin Peterson then grounded to the right side moving both runners into scoring position for designated hitter
Bo Folkinga.
Folkinga worked a 2-2 count and then drove the ball to the right field wall. Broncos' right fielder Jordan Whitman looked to have a bead on the ball but was unable to corral it as the ball bounced off the wall to score two. Folkinga ended up at second with the Wolves' first extra base hit of the game. Griffin Boyd then took advantage of the RBI opportunity as he lined one into the left-center field gap to put the Wolves in front 3-1.
Western added one more in the bottom of the fifth after Dillard smashed a line drive to center field. Taijeron broke in on the ball but quickly tried to recover to no avail as it flew over his head allowing Dillard to race around the bases and end up on third. Peterson then followed with a solid single to right to plate Dillard.
AJ Royal, Folkinga and Dillard all collected two hits to lead the Wolves. Folkinga also added two RBI and Dillard two runs scored.
Western Oregon (37-14, 27-5 GNAC) will now face elimination when they take on the loser of the UC San Diego and Sonoma State game, tomorrow (May 20) at 1:00 p.m.
