MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Saint Martin's Saints outscored the Western Oregon men's basketball team 27-7 down the stretch to earn a 74-65 win on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Jeremy Green had 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Saints (7-9, 3-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) handed the Wolves their first GNAC loss of the season.
Blair Wheadon led Western Oregon (13-3, 6-1 GNAC) with 20 points and four steals. The Wolves also got 12 points from
Kolton Nelson and 10 from
Kyle Long. Green's 18 points led four Saints in double figures.
Despite the loss this is still the Wolves' best start in GNAC history as they continue to maintain a share of first place with Western Washington, who won in Anchorage on Saturday.
Western Oregon led much of the opening half and took a 37-30 lead into halftime. WOU would extend its lead to as many as 12 in the second period. However, a scoring drought would prove to be the Wolves' downfall. After Long hit a jumper for WOU with 9:08 left, the Wolves went cold and would not hit another bucket for over eight minutes.
Meanwhile, the Saints fought back and tied the game at 60-60 on a 3-pointer by Will Bond. Green would follow up with a layup and a foul shot, and Bond would add in a 3-pointer to increase the Saints lead to six. They would hit 6-of-7 free throws in the final 45 seconds to preserve the win.
WOU will look to put this game behind them and get ready for Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 19th at 7:00 p.m.
