Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – For the first time in school history, the Western Oregon women's soccer team has shut four straight opponents as the Wolves blanked Simon Fraser, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Thursday night. With the win, WOU improved to 7-5-1 overall, 5-3-1 in league play as Simon Fraser fell to 1-11 overall, 0-9 in conference action.
On a foggy night that saw both teams create limited scoring chances,
Marina Austin connected on the only goal of the contest in the 31st minute. Off a corner kick from
Lindsay Bauman, Austin headed the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The goal would hold up the rest of the evening and would give Austin her team-leading third game-winning goal of the season.
“It was so foggy out there tonight neither team was able to really get into a good rhythm,” head coach Stave Ancheta said. “However, I was really pleased with the way we responded to the challenge. We kept fighting and found a way to find the back of the net. The defense did its part as well as we continue to keep playing good soccer.”
Like the previous three contests, the WOU defense was stellar throughout, limiting Simon Fraser to just three shots for the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Hillary Lutz recorded her fourth-straight shutout while makine one save as Amanda Gilliland took the loss for Simon Fraser while making six saves.
WOU managed to control the pace of the contest as the Wolves held a 10-3 advantage in shots while holding a decided, 13-1 edge in corner kicks. Rebecca Hoiland led the way with three shots for the Wolves.
The victory combined with other GNAC results on Thursday night placed the fourth-place Wolves seven points clear of fifth in the conference standings. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the GNAC Women's Soccer Championship to battle for the automatic berth in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
WOU will look to make it five-straight victories as the Wolves travel to Bellingham, Wash., to face league-leading Western Washington on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 4:00 p.m.
