Box Score BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon women's soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak end as the Wolves fell to Western Washington, 2-0, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday. With the loss, the Wolves fell to 7-6-1 overall, 5-4-1 in league play, while the league-leading Vikings improved to 12-2-0 overall, 9-1-0 in conference play.
The Wolves managed to hold the edge in shots in the contest, 9-7; however, the Vikings were able to connect on two of their chances to get the win.
After a scoreless first half, an opponent scored on WOU for the first time in over 443 minutes as the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. Kristin Maris scored her seventh goal of the season when she blasted a shot from 28 yards that defected off the crossbar and into the goal for the first goal of the contest.
Despite pressure from the WOU offense, the Vikings added an insurance goal in the 85th minute when Delanee Nilles found the back of the net off a scramble in front of the goal to give WWU a 2-0 advantage.
WOU would be unable to mount a comeback as the Wolves dropped their first contest since a 2-1 loss at Saint Martin's on Sept. 23.
Hillary Lutz saw her string of four consecutive shutouts end as she made three saves in the loss while Jamie Arthurs made five stops in net for the Vikings.
JoEllen DeLeon had two shots on goal to lead the Wolves attack as the Wolves held a decided 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
WOU will look to rebound when the Wolves travel to Ellensburg, Wash., for a meeting with Central Washington on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 3:00 p.m.
