Volleyball rallies for 3-1 victory over Nanooks

Wolves improve to 13-5 overall, 6-3 in league play, with the victory.

Box Score FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Samantha Ward had 21 kills while hitting .487 for the match as the Western Oregon volleyball team rallied for a 3-1 victory (20-25, 26-24, 29-27, 25-20) over Alaska Fairbanks in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Thursday night. With the victory, WOU improves to 13-5 overall, 6-3 in league play as the Nanooks fall to 3-13 overall, 1-9 in conference action.

After losing the first set 20-25, WOU responded with a pair of two-point wins in the second and third sets to grab a 2-1 advantage. With the score tied in the second set at 24-24, Danielle Reese followed a bad set by the Nanooks with a kill on the deciding point to give the Wolves a 26-24 victory.

WOU managed to claim another close battle in the third set as Ward secured a pair of points for the Wolves after the Nanooks had tied the set at 27-27. The outside hitter connected on a kill to reach set point and followed with a service ace as the Wolves claimed a 29-27 win to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the fourth set, WOU would go on a 6-1 run to grab a commanding lead as the Wolves would go on to win the set, 25-20, and sweep the season series with the Nanooks with the 3-1 victory.

Reese added 17 kills for the Wolves in the victory as WOU managed to hit an impressive .309 for the match. WOU managed to commit only 17 errors on 152 attempts as the Wolves managed 64 kills for the match.

LesLyne Satele had 26 assists to lead the Wolves while Jordin Ramos posted 25 assists in the victory.

Becky Blees led the defensive efforts as she recorded four block assists while Megan Triggs added 22 disg for WOU. Ward and Reese each recorded double-doubles for the match as the duo posted 10 and 12 digs, respectively, to go along with their double-digit kills.

The Nanooks hit .262 for the match as Sam Harthun led the way with 18 kills for UAF. Katlyn Mataya led all players with 44 assists in the loss.

WOU will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20, as the Wolves travel to Alaska Anchorage to face the Seawolves at 8:00 p.m.
