MONMOUTH, Ore. – Danielle Reese posted a double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs as the Western Oregon volleyball team held No. 12 Western Washington to just a .150 hitting percentage as the Wolves swept the Vikings, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21), in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Thursday night. With the victory, WOU improved to 15-5 overall, 8-3 in league play, as the Vikings fell to 17-3 overall and 10-2 in conference action.
“What a tremendous win for our team,” head coach
Brad Saindon said. “We were excellent defensively and Danielle (Reese) had an absolutely amazing game. It's been awhile since we beat Western Washington so to see our team come out and play the way they did was fantastic. It was a huge win in terms of what we need to do to meet our season goals.”
The win over the Vikings was the first for WOU since the 2008 as the Wolves snapped a seven-game losing skid against WWU. Reese led the way as the senior hit .395 for the match while
Samantha Ward added nine kills in the victory.
The Wolves got off to slow starts in the first and second sets as WOU found itself trailing for most of each set. In the opening set, the Wolves were down by as many as seven points; however, a 10-4 run with WWU nursing an 18-15 lead saw WOU claim the first set.
Krissi Kemper had three kills during the run, including a kill on set point that gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
The second set saw WOU in a similar position as the Wolves fell behind 15-11 before the Wolves went on a 9-4 run to grab a one-point advantage. The Wolves defense would be the key in the second set victory as three straight attack errors by WWU would close out a 25-21 set win for the Wolves to give them a two-set advantage.
Unlike the first two sets, WOU would grab an early lead in set three as the Wolves would build an 18-13 advantage. WWU would manage to close the gap to one; however, with the score 22-21, WOU would capture the final three points of the match as Reese provided the match-deciding kill to give the Wolves their fourth victory in a row.
WOU recorded 10 team blocks in the match as Kemper led a strong defensive effort with five block assists while Blees posted four. Reese had 15 kills to lead the Wolves while
Megan Triggs added 13 as WOU did not allow the Vikings to hit over .300 in any set.
LesLyne Satele had 21 assists for WOU while
Jordin Ramos recorded 14 assists in the win.
WWU's Marlayna Geary led the Vikings with 20 kills while Laurie Yearout added 32 assists.
WOU will look to make it five wins in a row when the Wolves return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host Simon Fraser at 7:00 p.m.
