Volleyball rebounds with 3-1 victory over MSU Billings

Samantha Ward leads WOU with 15 kills as Wolves hit over .300 for the match.

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Senior Samantha Ward recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs as the Western Oregon volleyball team defeated Montana State Billings 25-12, 20-25, 25-19, 25-15, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday night. With the win, WOU improves to 11-4 overall, 4-2 in league play, as the Yellowjackets fell to 7-8 overall, 4-3 in conference play.

“It was a great bounce-back win for us after a tough loss on Thursday,” head coach Brad Saindon said. “We hit the ball extremely well and our setters did a fantastic job of distributing the offense. Samantha (Ward) had one of her best matches of the season and it was an all-around team effort tonight.”

After the teams split the first two sets, the third set went back and forth and was tied at 18-18. WOU responded with a four point run to break open a lead and went on to claim a 25-19 victory in the set to grab a 2-1 advantage.

WOU would utilize another large run in the fourth set to finish off the victory as the Wolves outscored the Yellowjackets, 14-3, after MSUB grabbed a 12-11 lead early in the set.

Ward led all players with 15 kills and 16.5 points as the Wolves hit .301 for the match. Krissi Kemper added 14 kills and Danielle Reese had 11 while LesLyne Satele led WOU with 23 assists.

Seven separate WOU players recorded blocks in the match, led by Becky Blees with five as the Wolves out-blocked the Yellowjackets, 11-3.

Hannah Deede had three service aces and 10 points as Jordin Ramos added 19 assists for the Wolves.

Monica Grimsuld led MSUB with 15 kills as the Wolves held MSUB to a .132 hitting percentage.

WOU will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 11, as the Wolves travel to Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington at 7:00 p.m.
