MONMOUTH, Ore. – Dana Goularte posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds; however, it would not be enough as the Western Oregon women's basketball team fell to Hawai'i Pacific, 65-61, on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, WOU falls to 1-2 on the season while HPU improves to 2-1.
Goularte scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half as the Wolves used a strong defensive performance to carry a 31-27 lead into the half. WOU held HPU to just 10-of-26 from the floor in the first 20 minutes as the Wolves continually forced the Sea Warriors to turn the ball over.
HPU would respond in the second half; however, as the Sea Warriors used a 21-9 run over the first 11 minutes of the half to grab its biggest lead of the ballgame, 48-40, with 9:16 remaining.
WOU managed to chip away at the lead and used a 5-0 run with three minutes remaining to cut the lead to two points; however, Mikela Thoemmes lay-in with 17 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Sea Warriors and gave HPU a four-pointg win.
Thoemmes led HPU in the win as she came off the bench to lead all scorers with 24 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Senior
Lorrie Clifford led WOU with 20 points while hitting three shots from beyond the arc.
The Wolves were unable to take advantage of 27 HOU turnovers as WOU shot 23-of-61 (37.7 percent) from the field and were 8-of-17 from the line. The Sea Warriors rebounded from a rough shooting effort in the first half to go 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) from the field for the game while holding a 35-18 edge in points in the paint.
Katie Goddard came off the bench to score nine points while
Chantel Divilbiss had seven points, four assists and three steals for the Wolves.
WOU will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17, as the Wolves host Pacific Lutheran at 2:00 p.m.
