Women's Hoops falls in OT to Northwest Christian

NCU rallies for one-point win against WOU.

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team held Northwest Christian to just 33.3 percent from the field; however, the Beacons rallied in the second half to claim a 65-64, overtime victory over the Wolves on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, WOU fell to 5-7 on the season as NCU improved to 9-6 with the win.

The Wolves managed to get off to a fast start in its final non-conference game of the season, building a 19-point lead with a little over four minutes remaining in the first half. WOU would go on to lead 29-16 at the break as the Wolves held the Beacons to just 21.4 percent (6-of-28) from the floor in the first half.

Following the break, Northwest Christian would begin to chip away at the Wolves advantage as the Beacons eventually took a 34-33 lead with just under 11 minutes remaining.

After NCU took a six-point lead, WOU would mount a rally of its own as the Wolves would grab a 53-50 lead with just 15 seconds left. NCU would respond on its final possession; however, as Katie Collins was fouled on a three-point attempt with one second left in regulation. The guard stepped to the line and hit all three free-throws to send the game into overtime.

The Beacons managed to gain control in the extra period as WOU missed a three-point attempt with three seconds left to tie as a put-back at the buzzer left the Wolves one-point short, giving NCU a 65-64 win.

Mariah Durian and Lorrie Clifford led WOU in the loss with 14 points each while Chantel Divilbiss added 10 points for the Wolves. Whitney Rodriguez added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds for WOU as the Wolves shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field for the game.

Lindsey Shearer led the Beacons in the win with 24 points as NCU had three players finish in double figures.

WOU will look to rebound from the loss when it returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 3, when the Wolves host Seattle Pacific at 7:00 p.m.
