STANISLAUS, Calif. - The Wolves once again got strong pitching performances from their starter and the bullpen to take the opener from Cal State Stanislaus 6-3 on Friday, Feb. 24.
Grady Wood (4-0) went the first seven innings allowing just three runs (two earned) and striking out eight. He gave up 10 hits, but nine were single-baggers.
AJ Burke pitched the final two innings allowing one hit while striking out two for his third save in three chances this season.
Wood was staked to the early lead and never trailed in the game en route to his 12th win dating back to last season. The Wolves scored their first run in the second when Boyd doubled in
AJ Royal. They would add one more in the fourth on an error, then another in the fifth on
Blake Miller's first home run of the season to go up 3-1.
Cal State Stanislaus would get one in the fifth on an unearned run to cut the lead to 3-2. WOU would answer back with two insurance runs the next inning on a
Scott David RBI single and a sacrifice fly by
Josh Solemsaas to extend the lead to 5-2. The Warriors cut the lead back to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh but good pitching by Wood and a smart play at shortstop by Miller kept the Wolves on top.
Kyle Blackwell lead the offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Griff Boyd finished the game 2-for-3 and
David Amberson also collected two hits. Miller added two runs scored.
The teams will reconvene on Saturday, Feb. 25th for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m.
