MONMOUTH, Ore. - Central Washington shot 53 percent and outrebounded Western Oregon by 16 to upset the Wolves 94-74 on Senior Day (Feb. 25).
With the loss, WOU ends the regular season 18-9 and in fourth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 11-7 record. The win secured the sixth seed in next week's GNAC tournament for CWU with a record of 14-12 and 8-10 in the GNAC.
The starting senior backcourt for the Wolves did their best to keep WOU in the game as
Kyle Long scored a team-high 19 points and
Blair Wheadon added 18.
Kolton Nelson also scored 12, while freshman
Brian McGill put up 10 points and senior
Kris White added eight.
Lacy Haddock had 21 points to lead Central Washington. Four other Wildcats would put up at least 15 points in the game and they also hit 9-of-16 shots from behind the arc.
The Wildcats jumped on WOU early and never trailed after going on top 9-8 at the 16:17 mark in the first half. They would build their lead to as many as nine point in the first half and take a 37-31 lead into halftime. The Wolves started the second half strong and cut the Wildcats' lead to three (39-36) at the 18 minute mark, but CWU would then score nine straight points to take control of the game.
Western Oregon will now prepare for the GNAC tournament which starts Wednesday, Feb. 29. The Wolves have locked down the fourth seed and will face off against Montana State Billings on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Lacey, Wash.
